[Blog] Too Many Rappers

by Mr. Green Wings on February 25th, 2010

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/363/441/32512/asset.jpegYou’ve seen it on almost every music video on YouTube (hell, sometimes they even email you), MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and even DefSounds. It’s always that one or handful of people who go to where there is a lot of conversation going on, and then they tell you (in ALL CAPS usually) to check out their raps, production, or their small business. It has to be one of the most annoying things on the Internet that needs to stop (at least in my opinion).

True, the Internet is a place where you should start when promoting your product, but it’s how you go about doing it. Instead of telling us to check out B-Seezy on your shitty personal website, these spammers should:

1. Take their time to learn the business side of music (marketing, sales, etc.)

2. Find a hip hop website/community with a decent amount of people

3. Actually engage in conversations besides selling your shit (sometimes its literally e-shit)

4. When others listen to your music, be prepared for feedback. If you’re good, you’re good. And if you’re wack…well get back to the drawing board.

5. Start local. Millions of guys trying to blow up, only a handful of those will actually make it to the majors/dance club song & ringtone level.

Currently there’s too much of a supply than demand in hip hop. No disrespect to the established artists that do mixtape marathons, but some of this other stuff can go. Just think about it this way: if you’re doing the same thing as the next man, not doing feedback or practicing, along with not getting your name out there the right way…in about five or so years you would’ve wasted money on doing something that you know you either weren’t made for or didn’t prepare enough for. And props to the people who are smart about their grind.

And in closing here are two songs:

thats why ^ dudes on def sounds bombard comments with links lol, they just wanna be on here like the homie, u cant blame them for their lack of knowledge of how to get their stuff uploaded on here, i mean yeah its differently annoying to see it on a daily basis but how else can they goo about it? i see plenty cats post a song in the singles session but no one checks them out, so the last resort is the comments, i myself learned not to post links in comments.. lol it just isnt professional but for others who havent realized that and have zero buzz or affiliations or anything what can they do?

there are alot of rappers, but its your choice who makes it in the game..i dont see the big deal with being local, i know people that make hella cake just locally..if u have respect where ur from and u have decent rap skills or put out something people are feelin then u should have no problem makin rap money locally..not everybody can be on top, thats the problem, everybody wants to be a Jay Z or 50 Cent..shit id rather just have my decent sized crib, couple cars, and money that i can do what i feel like doing then to be overly wealthy and have cameras and shit following me and i cant walk down the street alone, id rather live a normal life

First Tragedy is dope. Nas is the greatest to ever do it. Second I disagree with you. It’s just a whole lot of garbage ass rappers. The bad always the good in 2010. Hip Hop is just like Rock. You will always have a million rappers and you will always have a million rock and roll bands. Every genre goes through this.(While listening to Mike Posner)
