[Blog] Too Many Rappers
by on February 25th, 2010
You’ve seen it on almost every music video on YouTube (hell, sometimes they even email you), MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and even DefSounds. It’s always that one or handful of people who go to where there is a lot of conversation going on, and then they tell you (in ALL CAPS usually) to check out their raps, production, or their small business. It has to be one of the most annoying things on the Internet that needs to stop (at least in my opinion).
True, the Internet is a place where you should start when promoting your product, but it’s how you go about doing it. Instead of telling us to check out B-Seezy on your shitty personal website, these spammers should:
1. Take their time to learn the business side of music (marketing, sales, etc.)
2. Find a hip hop website/community with a decent amount of people
3. Actually engage in conversations besides selling your shit (sometimes its literally e-shit)
4. When others listen to your music, be prepared for feedback. If you’re good, you’re good. And if you’re wack…well get back to the drawing board.
5. Start local. Millions of guys trying to blow up, only a handful of those will actually make it to the majors/dance club song & ringtone level.
Currently there’s too much of a supply than demand in hip hop. No disrespect to the established artists that do mixtape marathons, but some of this other stuff can go. Just think about it this way: if you’re doing the same thing as the next man, not doing feedback or practicing, along with not getting your name out there the right way…in about five or so years you would’ve wasted money on doing something that you know you either weren’t made for or didn’t prepare enough for. And props to the people who are smart about their grind.
And in closing here are two songs:
