[Blog] Dear Fabolous: Carlito's Way Was NOT A Love Story
by on June 22nd, 2009
I've been away from blogging for a bit--tryna make sure everything's running smoothly since we've had a bumpy past couple of weeks. There are still a couple of things being worked on but I have some time to get back to fucking ya'll up with some truth.
Anyways, late last year, word of Fab's forthcoming LP got out and got alot of people excited with anticipation. Fab is said to be following in the footsteps of Jay-Z with Loso's Way. A concept album based on the cult classic, Carlito's Way.
Carlito's Way Trailer:
Carlito's Way, starring Al Pacino, follows a Puerto-Rican ex-con who was just released from prison. As he pledges to stay away from drugs and violence, the pressure around him as well as an "unfortunate" turn of events land him right back into the life he wanted to leave behind.
The film plays out in epic proportions. Carlito Brigante is the stuff of legends in the flick and has been sampled on countless tracks thanks to the great writing.
Carlito's opening monologue from the beginning of the film is used in Jay-Z's "Intro/A Million And One Questions/Rhyme No More" track off his sophomore album "In My Lifetime, Vol.1".
The dialogue from the pool room scene, "Okay I'm reloaded!", "Think you big-time?, You gonna die big time!" and "Here comes the pain!" are used in Jay-Z's "Brooklyn's Finest" track from his debut album "Reasonable Doubt," and the Farmer Boys' single Here Comes the Pain.
The ending monologue is sampled on Ghostface Killa's album "Ironman", at the end of the song "The Soul Controller." A rendition of the same monologue is also given on the intro to Jay-Z's "Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life."
End Monologue:
Reading this so far, it's not hard to see what kind of movie it was and what kind of music it should inspire. It's one of the original gangsta flicks that have influenced plenty of what we see today in the same genre.
So why is the first major single an R&B collabo called "Throw It In The Bag"? I know it's all about marketing--I know this sells well but Carlito's Way was not a love story. There' was a love interest yes--but the core of the movie wasn't no lovey dovey I'll buy you anything shit.
I'm a huge fan of Fab so it's disappointing to continually hear him on these soft collaborations. Why can't we get another Breathe? Even the street single "My Time" is rather weak.
Fabolous- Breathe
Looking at the track listing for the album, 5 out of the 16 tracks feature R&B artists and I'm sure will follow the same formula Fab can't seem to break away from.
Dear Fab, please understand you set a pretty high bar for yourself, Hip Hop, and Movie fanatics when you said this was going to be a concept album based on Carlito's Way.
Hip Hop has already bastardized the shit out of the movie with that god forsaken prequel "Rise To Power." Please don't do the same with this album.
Rise To Power Trailer
I'm starting to lose faith in you as a fan. You only seem to be a monster on features and remixes--rarely on your own.
Drop something that'll give us a sign of hope.
One could always argue Carlito's Way was a love story. But then again, one could also argue Rick Ross didn't lie about being a C.O. or that in theory, Communism works.

if your doing a concept album then you have to follow whatever it is that its based on
look at Jay’s American Gangster album,
sure it wasnt his best work but for me what made it a good album is that when you listened to each track,
you actually felt like your in the movie (i guess you would have had to have seen the movie first), you felt like you were back in that 60s/70s gangsta lifestyle shit
every track was related to the flick which was also a damn good movie.
thats what Fab needs to try and emulate but from what iv heard so far thats not the case and its a pity

These Is My OPINIONS!!
1. “The Way” (Intro) StreetRunner
(Most Likely This Will Be A Nice Intro, Lets Just Hope He Raps About Something, And Doesnt BRAG About How Fly He Is On A Concept Album)
2. “Feel Like I’m Back” J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League (Not Sure What To Say About This Song, But Production By Justice League Most Likely It Will Be Nice)
3. “My Time” (featuring Jeremih) The Runners
(Fab Just Used A Bunch Of Punchlines Related To “Time/Clocks”…And Jeremih Really Made The Song
4. “Imma Do It” (featuring Kobe) DJ Khalil
(Sounds Like A Gritty Song..Especially Sing DJ Khalil Made The Beat)
5. “Everything, Everyday, Everywhere” (featuring Keri Hilson) Ryan Leslie
(This Is The Song People Are Labeling As “Your Baby”..This Song May Be Nice..But It Has Nothing To Do With Fab Coming From The Street..He Said In A Verse On This Song "I Got The Name On The Chain, Just So They Can Know Who’s Who’s "..Braggin ? )
6. “Throw It In the Bag” (featuring The-Dream) Christopher “Tricky” Stewart
(No Comment, Bitches May Like This A Some Niggas Who Are Biased, Plus I Think The Dreams Style Does Not Fit Any Kind Of Rhythm This Album Should Have For This Movie)
7. “When the Money Goes (Remix)” (featuring Jay-Z) Jermaine Dupri
(Probably The Best Song On The Album And Its Somewhat Connected To The Movie, Bad Thing Though Is Jayz Put His Version Out Of This About 6 Months Ago)
8. “Salute” (featuring Lil Wayne) Miguel for “The Council”
(Seems Like A Song About How People Should Salute Him Cause Hes A Boss Or Something, But Lil Wayne Is On This..And Im Not A Wayne Hater, But Most Likely Waynes Going To Be Rappin All Dumb )
9. “There He Go” (feat. Paul Cain, Red Cafe & Freck Billionaire)Blackout Movement

Last Time (Gotta Go) – This song is riddled with double entendres, and metaphors. Throughout this song he describes his relationship with a chick, but at the same time describes his ‘constant calling to return to the streets’, after all it’s hard to break old habits. Now the comparison: When Carlito is released from prison he vows to stay away from his former drug dealing ways, so he becomes a club manager, rekindles his love with his ex, and while she shows him promises for a better life; old associates, and old instincts keep dragging him back into his old habits.
When The Money Goes – This song is as the name of the song states, when you have money people will be “loyal”, but as soon as you lose the money, all the people you trusted, all the friends you thought you had will leave you.
It’s My Time – Basically the song explains how it’s a new day, a new time period to let go of the past and start over. When Carlito is released from jail he becomes a nightclub manager keeping every dollar he gets so he can move away from everything.
Now for the ever so hated single, ‘Throw It In The Bag’, earlier today Fabolous went live on his website and explained the story behind the single. He tells everybody how he understands the song doesn’t directly correlate with ’Carlito’s Way’. But he goes on to say that when people would come into the studio while he was doing this song, people would be bobbing their heads and just vibing to the track, so he basically says it was a judgment call to put this song on the album.
Sure, his singles are not as dark, and gritty as some would have, but either way the songs have a clear connection to the movie. Now you can go ahead and pick apart my comparisons, and argue about them; with that being said, I have to watch Carlito’s Way again, I haven’t seen it in about a year, I was surprised I remembered that much.
