[Blog] Dear Fabolous: Carlito's Way Was NOT A Love Story

by Jokesta on June 22nd, 2009

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/1937/1991/24194/asset.jpegI've been away from blogging for a bit--tryna make sure everything's running smoothly since we've had a bumpy past couple of weeks. There are still a couple of things being worked on but I have some time to get back to fucking ya'll up with some truth.

Anyways, late last year, word of Fab's forthcoming LP got out and got alot of people excited with anticipation. Fab is said to be following in the footsteps of Jay-Z with Loso's Way. A concept album based on the cult classic, Carlito's Way.

Carlito's Way Trailer:

Carlito's Way, starring Al Pacino, follows a Puerto-Rican ex-con who was just released from prison. As he pledges to stay away from drugs and violence, the pressure around him as well as an "unfortunate" turn of events land him right back into the life he wanted to leave behind.

The film plays out in epic proportions. Carlito Brigante is the stuff of legends in the flick and has been sampled on countless tracks thanks to the great writing.

Carlito's opening monologue from the beginning of the film is used in Jay-Z's "Intro/A Million And One Questions/Rhyme No More" track off his sophomore album "In My Lifetime, Vol.1".

The dialogue from the pool room scene, "Okay I'm reloaded!", "Think you big-time?, You gonna die big time!" and "Here comes the pain!" are used in Jay-Z's "Brooklyn's Finest" track from his debut album "Reasonable Doubt," and the Farmer Boys' single Here Comes the Pain.

The ending monologue is sampled on Ghostface Killa's album "Ironman", at the end of the song "The Soul Controller." A rendition of the same monologue is also given on the intro to Jay-Z's "Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life."

End Monologue:

Reading this so far, it's not hard to see what kind of movie it was and what kind of music it should inspire. It's one of the original gangsta flicks that have influenced plenty of what we see today in the same genre.

So why is the first major single an R&B collabo called "Throw It In The Bag"? I know it's all about marketing--I know this sells well but Carlito's Way was not a love story. There' was a love interest yes--but the core of the movie wasn't no lovey dovey I'll buy you anything shit.

I'm a huge fan of Fab so it's disappointing to continually hear him on these soft collaborations. Why can't we get another Breathe? Even the street single "My Time" is rather weak.

Fabolous- Breathe

Looking at the track listing for the album, 5 out of the 16 tracks feature R&B artists and I'm sure will follow the same formula Fab can't seem to break away from.

Dear Fab, please understand you set a pretty high bar for yourself, Hip Hop, and Movie fanatics when you said this was going to be a concept album based on Carlito's Way.

Hip Hop has already bastardized the shit out of the movie with that god forsaken prequel "Rise To Power." Please don't do the same with this album.

Rise To Power Trailer

I'm starting to lose faith in you as a fan. You only seem to be a monster on features and remixes--rarely on your own.

Drop something that'll give us a sign of hope.

One could always argue Carlito's Way was a love story. But then again, one could also argue Rick Ross didn't lie about being a C.O. or that in theory, Communism works.

The answer is easy…With this music slump, he has to put out this type of album if he wants any chance at getting air-play or moving units.

Fab hasn’t done himself justice since Breathe. sometimes you raise the bar too high on yourself. looks like this album is a promise he couldn’t keep… also, check my blog Defsounds and hit me with some feedback.

i agree with you jokesta
if your doing a concept album then you have to follow whatever it is that its based on
look at Jay’s American Gangster album,
sure it wasnt his best work but for me what made it a good album is that when you listened to each track,
you actually felt like your in the movie (i guess you would have had to have seen the movie first), you felt like you were back in that 60s/70s gangsta lifestyle shit
every track was related to the flick which was also a damn good movie.
thats what Fab needs to try and emulate but from what iv heard so far thats not the case and its a pity

totally agree.. i like fab a lot but hes gettin real corny wit this shit.. just think of the material from his first couple cds compared to his last 2.. he had some bangers on his first albums.. the last couple are all features of r&b artists.. while i think he appeals to more fans (bitches) by doin this.. overall hes hurtin himself in the eyes of true hip hop fans who arent tryin to hear hear his next song with tpain or dream or the current hot r&b artist.. and especially this being a “concept” album— the concepts already ruined.. not one time in the movie did carlito tell his girl to “throw it in the bag”.. maybe he just couldnt think of enough shit to make it a concept album so hes like fuck it the bitches will still bump this..

Fabolous is wack as hell. He has mad potential and shit but uses it for lame love tracks. I looked over the tracklisting and judging by the names of the songs on Loso’s way, this shit can be this year’s hottest R&B album. The only decent song i heard was A toast to the good life and supposedly it didn’t make the cut

I understand the blog and shit, but you have to understand.. Cats these days don’t go out an buy albums they just go and download, so it’s simple put out singles that will get the chicks buzzin’ and have them go out and buy/support the album. Plus it’s Fab, he’ll always destroy the mixtapes he puts out, and he probably does have a few street bangers on this album.

I GOT ABOUT AN HR SO LET ME BREAK THIS DOWN!!!…I Agree With You Jokesta, Fabolous’s Album In My Opinion Is Going To Ruin This Movies Legacy..He Could Of Just Called His Album Something Else.. Without Having Carlitos Way As The Concept, Cause Now That Hes Going To Base His Project Off Some Film..Us Fans Are Going To Expect It To Be Like A Soundtrack To To The Movie..Even Though Fab Says Its Going To Be Similiar To The Movie..Since He Was A Dude Who Came From The Streets Like Carlito..And How Hes Just Going To Tell The Story From His Side Etc..Throw It In The Bag Has NOTHING To Do With Carlitos Way…Neither Does “My Time” With Jeremiah AkA A Fake The Dream..I Dont Care If Hes Trying To Get Airplay..Too Bad Them Songs Isnt Getting Any Play..And Im Not Hating This Is The Truth..Matter Of Fact..Wasnt Jayz’s First Single Off His American Gangster Called “Blue Magic” ..And His Single Did Well..And It Was Connected To The Movie..Fab Could Of Made A Hit Single Connected To This Movie..I Guess Hes Not Being Creative Enough..Lets Look At His Tracklist Now

These Is My OPINIONS!!

1. “The Way” (Intro) StreetRunner

(Most Likely This Will Be A Nice Intro, Lets Just Hope He Raps About Something, And Doesnt BRAG About How Fly He Is On A Concept Album)

2. “Feel Like I’m Back” J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League (Not Sure What To Say About This Song, But Production By Justice League Most Likely It Will Be Nice)

3. “My Time” (featuring Jeremih) The Runners

(Fab Just Used A Bunch Of Punchlines Related To “Time/Clocks”…And Jeremih Really Made The Song

4. “Imma Do It” (featuring Kobe) DJ Khalil

(Sounds Like A Gritty Song..Especially Sing DJ Khalil Made The Beat)

5. “Everything, Everyday, Everywhere” (featuring Keri Hilson) Ryan Leslie

(This Is The Song People Are Labeling As “Your Baby”..This Song May Be Nice..But It Has Nothing To Do With Fab Coming From The Street..He Said In A Verse On This Song "I Got The Name On The Chain, Just So They Can Know Who’s Who’s "..Braggin ? )

6. “Throw It In the Bag” (featuring The-Dream) Christopher “Tricky” Stewart

(No Comment, Bitches May Like This A Some Niggas Who Are Biased, Plus I Think The Dreams Style Does Not Fit Any Kind Of Rhythm This Album Should Have For This Movie)

7. “When the Money Goes (Remix)” (featuring Jay-Z) Jermaine Dupri

(Probably The Best Song On The Album And Its Somewhat Connected To The Movie, Bad Thing Though Is Jayz Put His Version Out Of This About 6 Months Ago)

8. “Salute” (featuring Lil Wayne) Miguel for “The Council”

(Seems Like A Song About How People Should Salute Him Cause Hes A Boss Or Something, But Lil Wayne Is On This..And Im Not A Wayne Hater, But Most Likely Waynes Going To Be Rappin All Dumb )

9. “There He Go” (feat. Paul Cain, Red Cafe & Freck Billionaire)Blackout Movement

( This Song Shouldnt Even Be On Here..Should Of Kept This On The Mixtapes..The Hook Goes “Im So Fly, Im So Fly, U Might See A Nigga If You Look Up In The Sky”..This Was Red Cafes Song Originally Too)

10. “The Fabolous Life” (featuring Ryan Leslie) Ryan Leslie

( The Title Of The Track Says It All..Hes Going To Talk About The “Fabolous” Life, Hopefully Hes Talking About His Life In A Real Way As In “Fabolous’s Life”..And Not BRAGGING ABOUT A FABULOUS LIFE"

11. “Makin’ Love” (featuring Ne-Yo)Jermaine Dupri

( This Songs Title Already Tells You, Hes Talking About “Having Sex”…No Comment..Its Leaked Already If You Havent Heard It, Youtube It"

12. “Last Time” (featuring Trey Songz) Jermaine Dupri

(This Song Has Leaked Too..And Hes Talking About A Female..AGAIN..You Know How Fab Does With The Females..He Just Changes Up The Situation Hes Having With A Girl And Does A Song"..Trey Songz Must Feel Weird Singing Another Hook About " The Last Time" ..LOL!"

13. “Stay” (featuring Marsha Ambrosius)Syience

( This Probaby Will Be Another One Of The Best Songs On Here, Since Hes Talking About His Son..That Falls In With “Losos Way” )

14. "Pachanga"Sid V

( This Song Seems Like It’ll Be The BEST Song On Here..Fab Said It Himself, How He Talks About Friends Who Change Up Like Pachanga Did To Carlito In The Movie)

15. “Lullaby” The Alchemist

( Im Not Sure If Thsi Is That “Return Of Mr Fab” Track That Leaked But Im Sure By The Title " Lullaby", This Will Be A Gritty/Street Song, Especially With Alchemist Producing It"

16. “I Miss My Love” Sean C & L.V.

(The Last Songs On Albums Usually Are Always Good, So This Tracks Title Seems Like It Has Potential, But He Might Be Talking About A Girl By Saying “I Miss My LOVE”..Unless He Surprises Us Fans

Alright Now I Broke It Down I Got 20 Minutes, But I Just Wanted To Fill People In On This So Called Concept Album..This Album Will Look Bad Cause Of The Concept He Put On It..I Think If Fab Labeled It Something Else..Itll Be A Decent Project..I Understand How Loso Does All The Girl Tracks Cause Thats How He Does..Fab Is To The Point In His Career Where He Already Got The Female Fans On Lock..So He Doesnt Need To Always Focus On Them..Cause There Going To Buy His Album Regardless Due To His Pass Work..Even Though His 1st Album Didnt Even Have Any Singles For The Ladies..But This What I Typed Is Only For Real Hip Hop Listeners..Not These People Who Could Careless About His Albums Quality They Just Want Some “Tight Sounds” ..And Fab Find Some Talent For Street Family Im Tired Of Seeing Your Lazy Street Family Niggaz In Brooklyn Wearing Your Jewelry Acting Like Their Superstars Cause They Know You..I Just Laugh Thinking About How Street Family Is Going To Turn Into Junior Mafia..When Biggie Died..Fab Whats Street Family Going To Look Like When You Quit Rapping And Bringing In Money To Support Them?

Alright people are talkin’ and commenting on here and don’t really know shit.. No examples, but you know how you are haha.. Anyway, let’s compare songs to the movie..

Last Time (Gotta Go) – This song is riddled with double entendres, and metaphors. Throughout this song he describes his relationship with a chick, but at the same time describes his ‘constant calling to return to the streets’, after all it’s hard to break old habits. Now the comparison: When Carlito is released from prison he vows to stay away from his former drug dealing ways, so he becomes a club manager, rekindles his love with his ex, and while she shows him promises for a better life; old associates, and old instincts keep dragging him back into his old habits.

When The Money Goes – This song is as the name of the song states, when you have money people will be “loyal”, but as soon as you lose the money, all the people you trusted, all the friends you thought you had will leave you.

It’s My Time – Basically the song explains how it’s a new day, a new time period to let go of the past and start over. When Carlito is released from jail he becomes a nightclub manager keeping every dollar he gets so he can move away from everything.

Now for the ever so hated single, ‘Throw It In The Bag’, earlier today Fabolous went live on his website and explained the story behind the single. He tells everybody how he understands the song doesn’t directly correlate with ’Carlito’s Way’. But he goes on to say that when people would come into the studio while he was doing this song, people would be bobbing their heads and just vibing to the track, so he basically says it was a judgment call to put this song on the album.

Sure, his singles are not as dark, and gritty as some would have, but either way the songs have a clear connection to the movie. Now you can go ahead and pick apart my comparisons, and argue about them; with that being said, I have to watch Carlito’s Way again, I haven’t seen it in about a year, I was surprised I remembered that much.
