Are the good rappers not selling because they suck?

… at marketing?

Nas came out with an anthem. Since then, every one has become the expert...pointing fingers at every other rapper and movement because album sales aren’t what they used to be. The problem with all the barbershop talk and internet nail salon gossip is that most of the time, people are failing to see the bigger picture.

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/1529/1547/8948/asset.jpg

Hip Hop isn’t the only genre in danger, it’s the music business as a whole. Sales have been going down considerably in the last few years—labels are having to get smarter with their releases and it’s getting harder and harder to go platinum!

Labels started selling less when they released artists who weren’t as magnificent as their predecessors. Believe it or not, Defsounds readers, there was a time when you could hear an artist’s single, go out and buy the album and bump it from beginning to end. Now you’re lucky if the single is worth buying.

So, with the sudden influx of mediocre artists two-stepping their way across the music scene, we can’t help but feel like labels are getting lazy and putting out garbage because it’s the easiest thing to do with the least amount of work. Sike. No it isn’t. Wait. Yes it is, but “harder” is the wrong word. Labels are having to work for that platinum status. And that’s a good thing.

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/1526/1544/8945/asset.jpgThere was a Golden Era in music, where every album was a piece of artistry sewn into the fabric of foreverness. Now it’s some whack shit slapping you across the face, kind of.

The assumption is right. On one hand, it is less work, but that’s because the artists they’re picking up are people that are busting their asses to make a check. It’s not just about a catchy chorus and inventing a new dance every six to eight hours depending on weather conditions in the South and Midwest. It’s about what these “bubble gum” artists are doing behind the scenes. They’re promoting their asses off. Performing over 200 days a year. Out on the road doing shows, from club to amphitheater to House of Blues. And why? Because they understand that they have to compensate for their mediocrity. Their work ethic is sick.

What about your favorite MC 5000? As soon as he gets a deal and doesn’t sell—or doesn’t get a deal and doesn’t sell—he’s assuming that it’s because they only want the cookie cutter image. Let me note here that I use “he” as an example because women don’t rap. April fools. Most of the time, and we all know it’s true, MC 5000 doesn’t have that same willingness to slave over his music because he’s assuming that the game is based on skill alone. It’s an “I’m the shit, I shouldn’t have to do anything but present my music,” type of mentality that leaves them stuck. Ego is a big thing in the Hip Hop world, you have to establish yourself as the sheeeeeeeeyiznit. But that’s getting in the way of getting a deal since MC 5000 is too intergalactic to try and connect with his public.

So maybe if all our favorite rappers would unbunch the silk panties they have stuck up their asses, and understand that in order to get picked up and pushed by a label you have to prove to them that you won’t be a waste of their money—something we wouldn’t blame any normal person for doing.

http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/1527/1545/8946/asset.jpgBesides, Souljah Boy isn’t as whack as ya’ll make him out to be. He was 17, making dance music. I love Immortal Technique, but I’m not trying to get down to Dance With the Devil. I’d rather objectify that woman and Superman her.

Immortal Technique sold 30,000 records with no distribution, for the record. Proof that dope stuff sells, you just have to hustle your ass off half as hard as he did to make a decent living.

All views and/or opinions in this article are not the sole belief/disbelief of Defsounds owners, staff or affiliates.

I’m blaming this shit on the internet. Really doe. I know that all of the world would be SCREWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED without internet, but hey, I’m from Iraq, my uncle once send a bird across Iraq with a letter and it fucking came back with a reply LOL. Now, let’s rewind the time, let’s go back to the 80’s and 90’s.. All the rappers where on their grind, NWA, Rakim & Eric B, Wu-Tang and the list goes on.. They were going platinum and even diamond cuz of there was no fucking internet to leak their shit and that’s why everybody did so good. Nowadays it’s like a track get’s leaked 4 months before the album drop and like a weed or two before the whole album got leaked.
I remember going to Iraq, it was like 4-5 days before The Cool dropped and I was like “Yo man, I need that album for my trip” and I just had to get the album, and I ended up downloading the shit even though I promised myself to go and cop the album.

Now, I’m not claiming I’m some kinda saint or something, but dude, I’m really blaming all this shit on the internet..

For the stupid people
NO INTERNET = NO LEAK = BETTER ALBUM SALES

What about shitty rappers who also suck at marketing? Take Reign for example. Dude sounds like a poor-man’s South Park Mexican, and his grassroots marketing campaign on Defsounds is a failure at best.

well..im a young guy, and honestly, i don’t know much about hip hop before 2000. but i do understand what you mean about the bubblegum MC’s working their asses off. i mean, Soulja Boy will perform at a lynching if it’ll get him promotion.

Nas wouldn’t perform at a small nightclub. it’s the difference in their demeanor. Nas is a profilic rapper, he is well off, and he is generally heralded as the GOAT.

Soulja boy is well known, he is pretty broke in all actuality, and he is widely considered as the Brutus who delivered the final stab to hip hop. so he has to grab any gig he can to get promotion, sell cds, and sell merchandise.
Nas on the other hand, can get a show just about anywhere. he doesn’t see any reason to go out and jump around and dance and whatnot because of his reputation as the best. so, as stated above, he figures his rhymes will be enough. this isn’t a great comparison, but it gets the point across.

the second more great rappers start performing year round and with as much intensity as kanye, the second real artists will start generating a much bigger buzz in the game.

or they could go the “Nigger/Untitled” route and build a buzz off of controversy. and you all know this statement is truth so just take it, like it and love it.

and Nas and Soulja Boy are in no way shape or form on the same scale, i used them because they are polar opposites, so don’t crucify me, i’m just dropping my opinion doods.

What is hip hop any way. i like to think that hip hop is what nas, mos, talib, IT, krs, gza, tupac, eminem etc are doing. hot verses using metaphors and similes with a great flow on a dope beat. like telling stories and talking about real life scenerios and just having fun. i think this new pop/dance/bubblegum shit whatever u want to call it should just get a new genre to end all of this bullshit. hip hop aint dead it aint the same as it was. one requirement for hip hop should be writing your own meaningful lyrics

i agree that the internet had a influence on this. but artist just need to adapt. you can do everything and more to promote your music. but if your music sucks. people arent gona recognize you. yeah you got a single but unless you prove yo self ppl just gona download, cause that catchy hit song is prolly hot just for the beat. n prolly the only decent song on the album. ya got to have some talent. sorry one hit wonders

listen to joe’s who, the whole way through. he makes alot valid points..

i wish, i fucking wish i could bump cds all the way through. eminem is my fav, he is consistant in dropin albums that i can bump all the way through. and he talks about some deep shit.

ill drop bills only for quality music.

It really aint about the internet or poor music quality. Y’all forget Cash Money whack asses was still going platinum. It’s ringtones and AR’s to blame. The AR’s done got lazy and shop the net for artist. After perusing Myspace and Youtube, the sign muthafuckas that already have a fanbase, publish the ringtones and they push your album based on that. Thats crazy. They not developing artist to make great songs. They just packaging and remixing shit unpolished artist are already making to get a quick buck. Its the equivelent of bringing home McDonalds and passing it off as dinner. Its good at first, but it gets old quick and muthafuckas stop buying it.

There’s nothing wrong with just listening to beats though if it’s meant to be dance music.

Merengue is one of the most popular forms of dance music in the world, let alone Latin America, and they got songs with absolutely NO substance.

La Vaca – The Cow.
Lyrics go like this
La Vaca. Moo.
La Vaca. Moo.
La Vaca. Moo.

What people pay attention to is the music, the beat, the arrangement, it’s all ill. At the same time though, they got artists like Ricardo Arjona who will put out a single of straight singing, with no chorus. He’s super political and has sold over 15 million.

The problem isn’t that Hip Hop is doing this or that, it’s that we’re not letting it do ALL of it. I’m sure no body would have a problem with Souljah Boy if Styles P was doing big numbers too. We need balance and diversity.

AND FOR OUR FAVORITE ARTISTS TO QUIT ACTING LIKE BREEZIES.

well said indeed. Thanks for the article great point outs but as the album sales are dipping down the Digital music industry is soring up at a very fast rate, to quote this weeks TIME magazine-

“U.S. album sales for the first quarter of 2008 plunged another 11%, according to a Nielsen SoundScan report that marks a continuing slump for an industry stuck in a downward spiral for six of the past seven years. U.S. digital sales, however, made up music’s lone bright spot: they soared 53% in 2007 and now make up 23% of all U.S. recording revenue.” (they even have nice pie charts for it)

But doesn’t that eventually get the Artist the money they worked for? or are we just saddened to see great foundation for the music industry die down?

The economy sucks, gas prices are out the roof, and were in a recession. Thats one part. But the labels are getting screwed too. Every artist has a budget as we all know. You bust that budget it comes outta your pockets as an artist. And if you release a piece of shit album, nobody buys ity, flops and then you as an artist are now in debt to the label.

While some savvy marketing can help sales( Kanye, 50, Lil Wayne) lack of it cant be blamed for failure. I mean I’m not Lil Waynes fan, but dude did sell a Millie(no pun intended) with his album leaked and 30 some odd mixtapes. It can be done. Creativity or lack of it gets shunned too. Jay tried a new approach with Kingdom Come and while it might have did numbers, some were put off by the grown up tone of the album.

Really though, if a Cd costs 15 bucks to buy and gas is 3.90 a gallon, I’m going to just listen first and buy or Limewire tracks I really can replay over and over.

Yo. Jay Z is one of my favorite rappers of all time. I think what he’s done for music and business and the positive role he’s made in young people’s lives.

But straight up.

Kingdom Come was whack. Eff all that “too sophisticated” non-sense. What’s he trying to say? That it went over our heads? That we as an audience couldn’t understand where he was coming from? My ass. It was trash. Half-hearted. Too bad kneegr0w.

And even with the economy in a recession … look. How many poor people you know still have fly kicks. People find a way to do things, it just has to be worth-while.

PLUS. The fact that people are spending so much on gas is because they’re dumb as shit.

Public transportation exists for a reason, but they’d rather break their banks for convenience. Eff that. I’ll take the metro to LA and back for 15 dollars. AND I’ll buy a CD. Kn’amsizzle. ;]

shit is the straight up truth my man..the future of albums, and the direction, and substance of music..its all in the hands of the kids and people who buy albums..

i mean its a two way street are people not buying cus the music sucks?
or do people make shitty music because people arent buying?

i dont think limewire or napster were the problem..its the way that the recording business handled them..the fuckin RIAA blew that shit WAY out of proportion, and all those artists that got all fuckin personally offended with their music bein available for free download..they fucked up

its our fault in part..but really..its the fact that just like the movies..and tv shows..with all those fuckin reality tv shows(fuck them..)..artists realized they could “get rich quick”, and that gimmicky shit sold..and stopped caring about the substance and meaning behind their shit..

sad but true..and the list is WAY too fuckin long.

and in closing..seriously, as much as i HATE the fuckin dude..Dj Khaled is helping the industry..hes collectivizing that shit and makin HUGE, DRAMATIC records with menacing ass production..its not his fault if shawty lo can rap, but hes tryna bring bone thugs, ti, wayne, rick ross, fat joe, akon, twista,NAS, beanie siegel, freeway..all those dudes onto one record..

I disagree about needing a gimmick. Obie Trice’s first album went platinum off of word of mouth and the quality of the album.

What happens is that people think you need a gimmick to blow. What you really need above all else is a connection with an audience. You can have the whackest shit ever, but if you’re giving back to the community, involved with your fans, and they feel connected to you, you can sell ridiculous numbers.

And that’s how it starts. Build a fan base and all else follows.
1 props | propProp | trashTrash
dagodabout 1 year ago
^^Nah homie, you and I both know why Obie went plat the 1st time just like how D12 keeps going plat. One word EMINEM! It didn’t have shit to do with the community and giving back….Eminem’s name helped them niggas go plat. If Obie was signed to Def Jam with out an eminem feature, he wouldn’t go close to plat, he would go gold at most.

I agree with Phillyallday215, the rappers he named and then some should of went plat but the hip-hop scene is different now. You can’t tell me Freeway wasn’t putting in work to promote his album and making himself hot. He was killing every mix-tape and feature he was on before his album came out. He still couldn’t go plat. The hip-hop scene, like I said caters to the dance and gimmicky shit nowadays. Unless you’re a big name like Jay, 50, Wayne, Kanye etc… You’ll be lucky to even go platinum with out some dance song and shit.

Man…..music SUCKS now compared to the late 80’s and 90’s. Sure there are a few artists putting out good music…but you can count them all ALMOST on one hand. Hip Hop is alive no doubt, but the TRUE life of hip hop as I know it is dying and fast. Now everybody wants to talk about shooting this or slanging that when in actuality half these niggas are lying through their teeth. They DON’T have guns and they DON’T slang shit. REAL Hip Hop artists stand up and keep it alive! (ie Kanye, Jay-Z, Nas, Common, Lupe. See? ONE hand)

rap music is a hustle (agree with it or not). its about putting out the best product (or at least the best seeming product) and letting the customers know you got that “good shit”. I think this article was on point in the sense that talented rappers get too complacent with their skill level. Not knocking all cause some do actually grind and pave their own ways and get creative with it but let’s be real… you can’t blame your label if you don’t catch a buzz… that shit’s all on you.

Ye in this day & age you are most definitely gon have to come up with a catchy song, or a real club banger, or even a song with a dance attached to it to gain numbers, but we sometimes forget the purpose of music which is to entertain. People always like to point fingers in situations where shit hits the fan and it’s real funny.

I respect the hustle more than anything cause that I think is one thing no one can fake out. The rappers who might not be as “lyrically inclined” as the next cat is probably out there longer on the block pushing his tape or making the trips to various radio stations to do promo interviews, doing drops, sending their shit out to different dj’s across the board and so on. People tend to forget that hip-hop music was originally independent.

nope, it’s not marketing or because they aren’t putting out anything hot

it’s 2 things which are called an “i-pod” and a “cd burner”…those 2 things fucked the music industry up for everybody. if you take away those 2 things, EVERYONE will go gold at the minimum and everyone will be eating good.

basically what i’m saying is, if there weren’t cd burners or limewire, every artist will go gold their first week no matter who they are because you will have no other option but to buy the album.

matiosabout 1 year ago
I feel what you’re getting at, but you have to understand first and foremost that anytime anything happens, certain conditions have to be met … meaning there’s a number of causes.

So it IS because of whack marketing, and no promotion, and garbage, just as much as the internet and CD burners are to blame.

That’s not the point though. If everybody sat around and came up with 1,000 reasons how a certain disease was contracted, nothing would get done. It takes the people learning how to get rid of the disease that make the movement.

So in music, it could be because of global warming. It doesn’t matter. Rappers better start selling ice packets with their CD’s to start pushing more albums. Or maybe not albums. Maybe the market is gonna move away from that, turn albums into a promotional tool and make all the loot off of shows.

It comes down to how dedicated an artist really is tho. Your typical “MC” nowadays don’t wana go out and hustle 4 da sales, like other artists such as: a Soulja Boy, ( dude is trash!!!!!!!) but he’s richer than the hottest MC on your block cuz he hustled not jus wit lyrics (like he really got any…lol) but wit his swagger and dancing like the article brought out. Us true hip-hop don’t buy it, but our lil sistas, lil brothas, and baby mamas are. So like Jay, we can’t knock the hustle. Learn it.

Kanye West is a perfect of example of what a rapper with actual talent should do to get on top. that man has an unbelievable drive to be in the game and we know that cause how emotional he gets when he gets snuffed.

so i guess dudes coming out dont have to dress like Kanye or anything, but damn you gotta work as hard as the dude does to go plat.

If they want better album sales they are going to have to lower the prices of albums. Not many people want to pay 15 bucks for a CD when they can get it for free. If albums where like 8 bucks you would see people buying them a lot more because people would feel it would be worth their money. They can’t just keep selling them at the same price they did 15 years ago before everyone had the option of free. They need to adapt.

what about lupe? arguably produced two modern day classics!
what about Mos Def? Steadily drops rediculous material with great content and extraordinary skill and with Black On Both Sides, made a hip hop classic yet can’t sell gold!
or the same with Talib Kweli?
Or how about AZ who possess so much lyrical skill and has a flawless flow and raps about everything that we expect from hip hop yet can’t even go gold?!
or even Nas who has never dropped a trash album with exceptions to Nastradomous, yet can’t go multi-platinum for some quality efforts that would normally, under today’s standards see mediocre albums such as Kingdom Come go platinum, Soulja Boy go platinum, D4L go near platinum, T.I. who I think is extremely overrated go platinum, etc etc…

I mean there isn’t a balance here and I don’t blame the artists, I actually place blame on the fans who allow IGNORANT shit to take over the game! I don’t mind having different forms of hip hop from Soulja Boy to Nas, but why is it that fans will by something as worthless as a Soulja Boy album yet let Nas sit on the shelf and creep to platinum? Makes no sense to me at all! The fans need to get their shit together and stop “killing” the genre and helping it sell out to the mainstream!

I think it has taken a while for us to realize it, but we hip hop fans want lyrics to go with a sick beat. We have come to realize that we CAN’T let hip hop slip away and I think that’s amazing right there. I completely agree with the whole dance music thing. When you go to a club…you want a club banger. A beat that has you bouncing and all. I think that’s where we should separate hip hop from that dance music. Let’s face it. We know what hip hop is and it sure as hell isn’t that.

Soulja Boy marketed himself through youtube and the internet and when he came out, he really started to sell, his music aint quality but he sure got the quantity portion of albums. AZ doesnt market himself at all damn near and his album came out in April and i doubt he broke 100k sales yet, but everyone knows AZ is lyrically talented as hell, its all marketing and Record Labels should be ashamed of themselves for this.

Soulja Boy can do 1000 shows a year,do magic tricks back flips hand-out cheese burgers etc etc…and i will still be like wow this guy is pretty garbage i wont be wasting my money on his album, and i wonder what goes throuh peoples heads when they buy a weak ass mc’s album, do they actually think this person has skills. I think Andre 3000 said it the best when he stated that hip hop fluctuates! Right now I think we’re going back to the “essence” as the music is a reflection of just having a good time, dancing and partying aka the burst for Soulja Boy. I am personally not a fan of him to any extent, but I can see why he’s selling as all this gangster, gangster bullshit is thankfully waring thin! But for me personally, the lyricism and originality is one thing that should never leave any wave in hip hop. But nowadays hip hop is suffering from artists not writing their own shit, not being original and basically regurgitating flows and styles that have already been used! Guys like Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, and yes, even Lil’ Wayne are bringing that originality factor back to the game which should be making them successful. But for guys like Lupe Fiasco, Nas, Andre 3000, AZ, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique and the likes, lyricism for some reason is no longer valued and that is the damn problem. Hip hop is an intelligent art form of poetry and is the key to being a great!
Bottom line is hip hop is struggling because it has gone so commercial, people judge rappers by what “hit records” they make and how many records they can sell. As a matter of fact, the beat is more than half of the reason why the record sells so big ups to the productions, but some of these niggas need to stop. I mean, some niggas aren’t saying ANYTHING in their work… AND THAT ISN’T ABOUT HIP HOP BECAUSE IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT THE MESSAGE!

Long live REAL hip hop… guys that keep it coming all the time… ICE CUBE, NAS, some of JAY-Z work cause he gone commercial too, AZ, EMINEM, OUTKAST, LUDACRIS some of his shit is so skillfull, MOS DEF, COMMON SENSE, TALIB KWELI, LUPE FIASCO, etc, etc!

Instead fans want to hear ignorant shit like Dipset and G-Unit and let that flourish while not giving other artists and forms that deserve recognition the light it needs. We have the power to decide what can become the next platinum style yet we stick with Soulja Boy and G-Unit with this rediculous gangster trash! What about some knowledge dropping shit! Where are the Nas, Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, 2Pac classics!? They are sitting on shelves while T.I. sells out haah and we wonder why?

We need to have more creative artists in hip-hop
New motherfuckers are, by default, becoming gangster rappers(knowin’ not a damn thing about that lifestyle) or making pop dance records (one-hit quitters)
We don’t need any new (and more than likely, lyin’) gangster rappers unless you can tell a different story
We damn sure don’t need more “rappers” makin’ pop dance records that go #1 but the album ain’t shit or sellin’ shit
By Lupe’s numbers with the Cool, it appears that creativity is coming back
(even thought the 1st single Superstar got heavy plays on pop radio) but even so, that shows that somethin’ different can survive in this fucked-up mainstream
P.S. Motherfuckers got to learn to write hot bars and make harder beats

honestly i’m not gon pay 14 dollars for something i can get for free. especially if i was to find out that the albums not even all that good and the artist just had some hot singles. why when i could get all the hot singles i wanted for free? its a reason everybody has legit copy of thriller in their cd collection cause those were the best 9 songs put together to form an album. if the artist came with a classic album them i’m gon want the cd just because its a classic. but if you got a few hot songs then why would i even waste my money. come with quality music and i’ll buy the album. now if everybody was coming with quality music then only the best artist would sell records and i’d bootleg the rest cause i’m not buyin 50 different cd’s. but right now only a few artists come with cd’s worth buying and if its a classic i’ll cop it but dont start complaining about limewire cause thats are answer to all those artist droppin tired ass albums and jippin you inot buyin them with one hot single.

Here’s another factor that has only been lightly touched on: women dictate all the buying trends, and they don’t generally like lyricists. They like catchy bubble gum hooks and stuff they can dance to. Guys who like lyrics seem to download a lot more in my opinion, and you can’t find the albums you want anywhere. Like right now, I live in a suburb outside Detroit, and if the rap album don’t say Eminem, Jay-Z, or Kanye West on the cover, it ain’t on the shelf. Add that to lack of grind, sissy record companies (like Def Jam punking out on the “Nigger” album), and the album for free on the internet before it even releases and … there you go. The real question is, how many of us are going to go to Best Buy or wherever and support an artist that we like, or just be satisfied with the copies we got off the internet, like f*** it, I already got the album?

I’ve always been a proponent of purchasing the actual physical album compared to downloading it for free. I’ve yet to download a single album and I own well over 100 CDs. I’m more than willing to throw down the $10 to $20 for the album (whether it released that day or 10 years ago). If that album is as good as I think it’s gonna be, then it’s more than worth my money. I truly feel that you gotta support the artists you love to listen to. Grab that album from the stores instead of being a lazy bitch and just downloading it. I understand if you’re iffy on an album’s content or it’s a new artists. Jumping online to get a listen to it is totally cool. If you like it, then go buy the album. If you don’t, then either download it or leave it be.

Also, as previously mentioned by many, a good work ethic helps considerably when trying to move albums, but if you’re shit is garbage then no amount of work ethic, performances, etc can make up for that.

i Respectfully disagree. when i wuz a teen in the early to mid 90’s (which is the time period that i fondly refer to as the “good old days” lol), there were just as many emcees and rappers as today if not more. i had hundreds of cd’s – all over my damn room from artists all over the country (bay area, L.A., N.Y. mostly) but i feel that (in addition to what Matios said) many, many artists were putting out quality albums – consistenly. But i do agree that they did have to prove their worth as an emcee (or rappper; i say that cuz i listened to MUCH west coast) to even get on back then, cuz we would never have bought in to skill-lacking artists like soulja boy back then… we woulda laughed him and all these talentless hacks (primarily hailing from the SOUTHERN reigon) outta town!

Right now the music is weak and getting weaker. I’m not going to knock some rappers hustle but old skool hip-hop is far better then this watered down music. But it’s down to the marketing as well. They are not going to push your shit properly if they have in the back of their mind that you as an artist is not making it mainstream..if you do go mainstream they want you to do bubble gum music.

So no one is going to shop to buy that kind of music. Then you got the net where you can download your music, your best artist etc…for free.

There’s many reasons for albums not selling as much as they used to. I don’ think it has anything to do with artists attitudes and only a small percent has to do with the Internet.

As we have evolved with new technology, people just aren’t in to music the same way they used to be. Now it seems everyone has too much stuff to do, and not enough money to invest in albums they can hear for free or on a $5 mixtape.

Nothing against mixtapes…I’m an artist myself, but at this point I would never sign with a major label because they will push my album back for years and try to commercialize it, while I’m grinding and tryin to feed my son.

The future of Hip-Hop is indie music and the Internet. I’d rather sell 5,000 copies of a mixtape every few months that I will get 100% of the money from ($25,000) rather than release 1 album every couple years that sells 100,000 copies and I only get 12 cents per copy of ($12,000).

If an artist is hot, is willing to work hard at promoting and marketing their own music…the streets can’t deny it.

The other problem is that the fans wants different things from an album that the indusrty does. The fans want the real shit, the hood shit and the industry wants the club bangers and the dance hits.

A major artist will have a hard time selling albums without selling out at least a little bit. If a major artist doesn’t want to sell out, they will have problems getting their label to market their music properly.

This is why I started 730 Enterprizes…we only release real shit, real talk, true life stories and experiences. You want dance music, holla at Diddy or somebody

I just think that rappers do too much lying on records. Most of them look like clown puppets to me. Everybody gotta chain around their neck…some real ,some fake…Seem like every rapper was a dope king pin. Now you got Plies callin himself a “goon” and glorifying a ski mask. Why? Then what happens is in “OUR” hoods…lil Pea Nut down the street from you really can’t comprehend the bulshit behind Plies gimmick…so Pea Nut starts to really rob folk wit a ski mask. I don’t know if it’s just me, but does it seem like most of the crimes that happen are done by 17-19 year old.

Of course, artists like T.I., The Game, Kanye, and Jay r pretty much gurranteed to do their 300K+ in the opening week cuz of the big fan bases. Lil Wayne prolly jus joined the club too. But to me there aren’t really any quality artists out anymore. Yung Berg, Ace Hood, Maino, Flo Rida all them r garbage to me Another reason still goes to illegal downloading.

We are simply in another era and we cannot recapture what the origin of hip-hop, marketing, etc because we have to look at who we are marketing to. I haven’t bought a CD-what I did, but it was on the humbug at Target, however, I buy mixcd’s, but no actual CD’s anymore because I know my lil sis will create most of the music I want via Limewire. Like the person above said, the internet is to blame along with technology, which means sell everything online?? Not sure because there are some who still are not up on the internet, computer usage, etc, and will buy CD’s. I don’t know-Soulja Boy was smart in his hustle-you cannot knock it-plus they placed him in the hip hop genre, but we all know the kiddos are making him rich! I didn’t buy any of his music-did you?? Rap isn’t going to be around forever. Mainstream rappers aren’t a true representation of what real rap is. Just because the niggas on MTV don’t make them good rappers it means that they have catchy tunes that people remember, not because you admire them as a person or as a real trapper. None of the artists are heavy traffickers when was the last time you saw a rapper go to jail for trafficking (besides BME)? On the real most of these niggas fake (RICK ROSS, PLIES, THE LIST GOES ON) and they are idolized as these fakes. Problem is that people will start to see through the bullshit and poof rap is in danger of going out of business. Who wants to buy albums from someone speaking a bunch of bullshit? The other thing most of you all fail to recognize is that rappers in the game are entertainers, not real people, like movie stars. Problem is that the fake character acting from movies has moved so far into rap that mainstream artists are lying out their asses about shit they heard bout on the streets or wherever they are. But they AREN’T real trappers. Everyone is a trapper in the rap game these days don’t that sound funny to you?

Other than that when im in a mall, I walk right by the record store. Im not paying 15 or 20 dollars for an album with 1 or 2 DECENT songs on it and 14 or 15 FILLERS. Now i beleive the reason why the lyricists, mcs, good rappers, whatever you wanna call em, they dont sell because the game has gotten to the point where artists are not recognized for their lyrics anymore. They make a hot beat and wack or catchy hook, trash verses and thats what these labels are promoting.its all bout money these days. but you gotta be money hungry but also put out good music at the same time so real listeners of music will support you in the future. these days album comes with just a couple of good tracks and the rest is wack. its nothing wrong with club music but when that all they do and call it hip hop and it doesnt have any substance to it theres something wrong with that. they rather make songs about a new retarded looking dance then spit lyrics with meaning. just like beanie sigel said.he doenst care if he dont go platinum.he’s just fine with making good music for himself and his fans who look forward to wat he has to say on a track. dont get me wrong by all means make your money but its ways of doin that without basically selling yourself out and jump on the band wagon because thats wats hot at the moment.look at ringtones sales. most of the songs are trash but its a hot beat so its sellin out.but that artists albums is unbarable to listen to. so my advice is.MAKE GOOD MUSIC.AND PROMOTERS AND LABELS. PLEASE SUPPORT THE REAL ARTISTS WHO RAP FOR THE FANS AND NOT JUST THE MONEY.BECAUSE DOWN THE LINE PEOPLE ARE GONNA REMEMBER YOU FOR WAT YOU DID IN THE RAP GAME AS FAR AS CHANGING IT OR BRINGING SUMTHING NEW AND CREATIVE TO THE TABLE. NOT HOW MUCH RINGTONES YOU SOLD OR HOW MANY DANCE SONGS WERE MADE HITS.

I have read the comments and personally I blame the ARTIST for poor album sales. ARTIST are making SINGLES not ALBUMS and what I mean by that is for example Lil Wayne sold a million copies or something like that b/c of one song and he said the same line through the whole song. He had a tight beat and a catchy ass hook and it sold the album, but not too many songs on his album was good except for like 3 or 4. So I will not waste my money on it if at least over half of it is good. Many artist nowadays let some songs leaks out and then when the album comes out have a few of those song on the album but the stuff that you download is not on the album itself and if it is good you will buy the album b/c you don’t have the other songs that you downloaded so you will buy it. Can’t blame the internet or downloading the ARTIST need to step their game up and make a complete album not a single and hope it sells the album.

He says nothing in his music.. he rhymes like a drunk/high free style cat in the project quad.. he is pushed to be the next best thing and he is corny. His biggest song is crap bubblegum stuff. “lollipop” I rest my case.

I’m old enough to remember rap from near the very beginning and I’m one of the urban white guys who defended it and played it for people who never heard it. i was driving a law firm’s car with Fuck The Police at top volume through downtown Seattle. For me, rap was a distant brother of punk (yeah, I know, meant something different). Rap didnt care if it didnt get on the radio, it was mad at society and not afraid to show it, and it was DIY. That was exactly the story of all music that came up from the grassroots. Like you said, it told stories. It told horrific tales that I wasnt going to live, but it was fascinating. And the production was no slouch either, Shocklee, Sadler, Dr Dre. They were the best of the best. Ice Cube leaves NWA behind and drops Amerikkka’s Most Wanted. PE puts out Fear of A Black Planet. The stuff was like Obama – you had to give it credit, no matter what your race. Eazy-E was a badass, but he died at the end of his crimes (in the song) – he was man enough to admit vulnerability, to admit the world sucked and was unfair.
That was real. First off, rap was original. It isnt any longer. its been done.
It can be done more, but it will take a genius to make it work, and music is rarely ever as good as right out the gate. Secondly, the materialistic bent does it no service. it robs it of credibility. Say what you feel. People know bankers are rich – you want to be a banker or an artist? People want to identify, not be made to feel small. Third – where’d all the politics go, and I dont mean complaining, I mean thinking. Anyway, we all get older, and young people will do what they want for themselves, but it sure does seem like music has gone straight to hell. The labels and producers are far too lazy, but someone will do something, because quality makes money. Personally, i think people should go back to playing instruments. Use samplers, but dont rely on them. You cant clear anything anymore. Oh yeah, going to Youtube, that’s why people dont buy music – its free, although the biggies are getting paid for youtube plays now….

The problem with this theory is that a nigga like krs one or somebody still wouldn’t sell no matter how much he toured or promoted his album cause nobody wants to hear his shit. Labels aren’t putting money behind anything they don’t think is going to sell so if you don’t already have a fan base somewhere than there’s really no point to touring because I wouldn’t go to a krs one concert if he had one.
