American Gangster Or American Fraud??
by on November 5th, 2007
With critically acclaimed responses and a new soundtrack album dropping by Jay-Z tomorrow, the authenticity of "American Gangster" is now being questioned. The movie, starring Denzel Washington as the lead character, is supposed to depict the life of Frank Lucas, a notoriously known drug dealer in the early '70's. However, as Frank Lucas states, "only 20 percent of the film is true."
The real-life Richie Roberts, the cop played by Russell Crowe in the movie, also had this to say , "The parts in the movie that depict Frank as a family man are ludicrous. They did it for dramatic purposes, you know, to make him look good and me look bad." According to Roberts, who prosecuted a New Jersey case against Lucas, the dealer wasn't the modest dresser and straight-dealing business man that the movie shows viewers. Roberts called the scene showing Lucas holding hands with his family in a Thanksgiving prayer "sickening."
Sources said Lucas
manipulated his family members, moving them from North Carolina to work
for him and even putting a hit out on his own brother. Law enforcement and prosecutors who worked the case said the flick distorts
Lucas' role in Harlem's drug scene, and is riddled with untruths, like
the involvement of rogue cops and the shipping of heroin in Vietnam
caskets.
I really don't see what the problem is with this. This isn't the first time a true story has been raped by Hollywood and dressed up to look more pretty to the public. There's no such thing as a "true story" anymore. If your movie has a decent amount of sex, drugs & violence, it will have a better chance of becoming successful. That may not be fair, but it's the truth. I also doubt that these recent statements regarding the validity of this movie is even going to hurt sales at the box office because, let's be honest, who really gives a fuck? Fake or not, if it entertains you, it entertains you.
I think Denzel was actually "under-scripted" in this movie. He could have done much more with this role if the script had been written a little better. It was a good movie, but far from a great one. We all heard the talk before the movie, about how this would be the Black "Goodfellas" or the next "Scarface" but in all actuality, it's not even close. I think Russell Crowe's character in the movie, Richie Roberts, had a very drawn out and long background. They both gave solid performances but it still left so many other elements out. That's what makes a 'good' movie, a 'great' one. Some characters were underdeveloped while others, were too involved. Cuba Gooding Jr. is actually in the movie, for a whole 30 seconds, playing Nicky Barnes, who was one of the head players in the Harlem drug game at that time. It would have made the film much more interesting had they developed that character more. All in all , it was a decent movie. Nothing to call classic, but not exactly horrible either.
American Gangster, crushed the competition at the box office this weekend, bringing in $46.3 million - the highest ever for a modern crime movie. - and further lining Lucas' pockets. Because he was convicted before the "Son of Sam Law" was enacted, Lucas can make money off of his story of drug exploits. With a feature film under his belt, the former drug lord plans to merchandise his story with a video game, a clothing line and he's in talks for a sequel to the film.

Frank Lucas: Through that whole movie, and the parts that Mr. Washington does, is 85-95% accurate. You can’t get much better than that.

Long story short they made Frank Lucas out to be the King of Harlem in the 70’s when that wasn’t true. Nicky Barnes and the council controlled Harlem in the 70’s. Also the H Frank was selling wasn’t called Blue Magic it was called Tru Blu which was the original title of the film when Denzel and Benico Del Toro were cast to play the lead roles.
It was a good fucking movie no matter what. Bootlegs look mad crispy!
Ne way my point about Denzel probably not being nominated is cause the studio’s submit their choices of actors to be nominated for BEST ACTOR. I doubt Universal will submit Washington’s name in considering Crowe was also a main character and had to be added to the poster of the film. Like The Departed Warner Bros. did not submit Di Caprio or Damon’s names to the academy for Best Actor and supporting actor because they did not want to say one actor was supporting another which is the same thing Universal will say here. Just my opinion.
Even Nas said on Get Down that Nicky Barnes WAS the 70s (but there’s a long list of high profile celebrities), but I heard that there was a 3rd dude who also had Harlem on lock in the 70s too… Anyone?
Both the History Channel and BET are running documentarys on Frank Lucas. I watched them both before watching the movie and both documentaries depect Frank Lucas the same way as they do in the movie.
It was his wifes idea to wear the coat an not anything he would have ever worn at any other time.

Ha, AND Nicky took a shot at Cam’ron, calling him a moron… hahahaaha! Wow, and Frank said Puff’s dad used to be @ his crib several times a week… wowwwww…
I’ll tell ya, you learn something NEW EVERY SINGLE DAY!
What alot of people don’t know Frank Lucas was also geeting money in D.C., Baltimore and V.A.
This is the highlight of this story, why? Think about it, this story is a great cover up so the public won’t think they actually did that back in the days.
and if they did show the truth the nigga would be dead right now
Dyoungin that ain’t true. Most of the shit about this film is true. Frank Lucas did use the dead vets to import the narcotics into the country. That ain’t a lie. What lies are in the film are the facts of Frank being the ultimate gangster in Harlem at the time and his appearance to the community coming from the neighborhood and listening to people who knew Frank and Nicky, Frank was the flashy nigga, the clown. But he was making money. Nicky was the ultimate gangster but he was addicted to Coke, Angel Dust and a much more wide variety of drugs. Frank was not the smartest one and that is obviously true as of in the course of the film he gets caught because of his greed. None of them are really smart in the long run. They all get fucked in the end. It’s a dirty business and like RADMEZ said the movie shows it as all movies try to. The Godfather showed how much the Don lost and Michael at the end..the one thing they valued most…family. Blow showed that George Jung lost the one thing he loved the most…his daughter. Scarface showed us that Tony lost it all; once he achieved everything he ever wanted (the world). The point is yes these films are not totally based on the truth of someone’s life. They try to make it better then it is. For what its worth this film was very good not great but pretty fucking good and does teach niggas a lesson at the end as all these films try to do.
