American Gangster Or American Fraud??

by reign on November 5th, 2007

With critically acclaimed responses and a new soundtrack album dropping by Jay-Z tomorrow, the authenticity of "American Gangster" is now being questioned. The movie, starring Denzel Washington as the lead character, is supposed to depict the life of Frank Lucas, a notoriously known drug dealer in the early '70's. However, as Frank Lucas states, "only 20 percent of the film is true."http://media.defsounds.com/uploads/assets/1655/1661/4128/asset.jpg

The real-life Richie Roberts, the cop played by Russell Crowe in the movie, also had this to say , "The parts in the movie that depict Frank as a family man are ludicrous. They did it for dramatic purposes, you know, to make him look good and me look bad." According to Roberts, who prosecuted a New Jersey case against Lucas, the dealer wasn't the modest dresser and straight-dealing business man that the movie shows viewers. Roberts called the scene showing Lucas holding hands with his family in a Thanksgiving prayer "sickening."

Sources said Lucas manipulated his family members, moving them from North Carolina to work for him and even putting a hit out on his own brother. Law enforcement and prosecutors who worked the case said the flick distorts Lucas' role in Harlem's drug scene, and is riddled with untruths, like the involvement of rogue cops and the shipping of heroin in Vietnam caskets.

I really don't see what the problem is with this. This isn't the first time a true story has been raped by Hollywood and dressed up to look more pretty to the public. There's no such thing as a "true story" anymore. If your movie has a decent amount of sex, drugs & violence, it will have a better chance of becoming successful. That may not be fair, but it's the truth. I also doubt that these recent statements regarding the validity of this movie is even going to hurt sales at the box office because, let's be honest, who really gives a fuck? Fake or not, if it entertains you, it entertains you.

I think Denzel was actually "under-scripted" in this movie. He could have done much more with this role if the script had been written a little better. It was a good movie, but far from a great one. We all heard the talk before the movie, about how this would be the Black "Goodfellas" or the next "Scarface" but in all actuality, it's not even close. I think Russell Crowe's character in the movie, Richie Roberts, had a very drawn out and long background. They both gave solid performances but it still left so many other elements out. That's what makes a 'good' movie, a 'great' one. Some characters were underdeveloped while others, were too involved. Cuba Gooding Jr. is actually in the movie, for a whole 30 seconds, playing Nicky Barnes, who was one of the head players in the Harlem drug game at that time. It would have made the film much more interesting had they developed that character more. All in all , it was a decent movie. Nothing to call classic, but not exactly horrible either.

American Gangster, crushed the competition at the box office this weekend, bringing in $46.3 million - the highest ever for a modern crime movie. - and further lining Lucas' pockets. Because he was convicted before the "Son of Sam Law" was enacted, Lucas can make money off of his story of drug exploits. With a feature film under his belt, the former drug lord plans to merchandise his story with a video game, a clothing line and he's in talks for a sequel to the film.

It’s a movie and that’s it. Not the 1st time Hollywood fucked up someone’s life story. At the same time they didn’t want the audience hating Denzel’s character so they watered him down (imo).

AllHipHop.com: Who is the real Frank Lucas? Obviously, we’ve seen the movie, but its just that – a movie. How accurate is the movie?

Frank Lucas: Through that whole movie, and the parts that Mr. Washington does, is 85-95% accurate. You can’t get much better than that.

ok so what if they overdosed on heroin…he didnt force the stuff in their veins and he wasnt the first heroin dealer and wont be the last…he was just providing the public with wat they thought they needed to survive and some actually did…he just used peoples weakness to his advantage and made millions off of those naive people…sorry sooo sad for them…it was their choice to use the drugs not his…and if someone made a movie about me i would appreciate it if i was paid for it too…people are getting entertainment out of his “story” although it was more ficticious than truth

people always look for a negative aspect when something is so successful and has a black lead. why not focus on how hard the film was bootlegged throughout America (w/a DVD version already out). They just wanted to hurt the box office sales because it a story based on a black figure. No one made a big deal abou the film Fargo and how the Cohen brothers directed and tried to depict it has a “based on a true story” film when in reality the entire film was fictional. Oh well though, it’s the society we live in. The film still goes hard

Man, I’m fond of ANY black movie that sends a positive message in the end, in this case: THE DRUG GAME has no long term security. People get killed, families get effed up, everyone winds up ratting (in real life, Nicky Barnes ratted too), and the community gets destroyed.

finally! someone with some smarts. People always miss the bigger picture of things. The film illustrated how the drug game ruined Harlam. Harlam before that in the 20s up to 50s was the city where everyone went to have a good time. It was the only city in America that accepted whites and blacks. This ate the white gov’t up and they destroyed that notion by placing drugs in the community.

Naa I dont think this real. I saw the American Gangster show on BET on Frank Lucas and the History Channel joint on Lucas and Barnes and Lucas and the cop would be on set for the movie filming and was consulted with and both Doc’s portrayed Lucas as a family man and moderate dresser although he did put that hit out on his brother

From this neighborhood. Most of the film was not true, Nicky wasn’t the flashy dresser as they showed in the film. He dressed well but not outlandish as they showed in the film. Actually Frank was the flashy dresser always wearing bright colored shirts, hats and that chinchilla out fit in the film. In Mr. Untouchable, Nicky even says that Frank was a dumb ass country boy that didn’t know how to dress and would run his mouth about how he had a direct supply coming in from Bangkok. But this isn’t something new. Movies that are inspired by a true story always make change things for you to sympathize with a character or just to make the story better. Like Donnie Brasco…they made Joe Pistone seem to care about Lefty’s life and made him seem as tho he did not want to leave organized crime because he feared that Lefty would be killed which was not true. He could care less about Lefty. Furthermore they never even killed Lefty Ruggiero as they made it seem at the end of the film. He actually went on trial with Sonny Red and the rest of them and still did not believe Joe Pistone was an FBI agent.

Long story short they made Frank Lucas out to be the King of Harlem in the 70’s when that wasn’t true. Nicky Barnes and the council controlled Harlem in the 70’s. Also the H Frank was selling wasn’t called Blue Magic it was called Tru Blu which was the original title of the film when Denzel and Benico Del Toro were cast to play the lead roles.

It was a good fucking movie no matter what. Bootlegs look mad crispy!

Also it’s true that Denzel could have hade a lot more to do and I think he will not be nominated for an Academy Award considering that fucking Crowe is also conisdered a main character they are in the film the same amount of time. Why call the film American Gangster if we are not seeing it only from Frank Lucas eyes but from two characters on opposite sides of the law? The original film was titled Tru Blu and had a different writer attacthed and Richie Roberts was not the cop brining down Lucas instead there was an undercover Cop involved. Benicio was suppose to play this role. They came to my pops restaurant in ‘04 (a film scout) to shoot the film but the director at the time wanted to get big names to be in the film and at the end the film went over budget so they shut the project down (but get this. Denzel and Benicio signed a special contract that stated they get paid just when they attach to the film and if the film did not go into Production they would keep there cash. Denzel made 20 mill even tho the film “Tru Blu” wasn’t made. Benicio made 5. After the script was re-written and titled “American Gangster” Universal gave the script to Denzel and he signed on to it and got paid another 20 million. Nigga made 40 million of this picture).

Ne way my point about Denzel probably not being nominated is cause the studio’s submit their choices of actors to be nominated for BEST ACTOR. I doubt Universal will submit Washington’s name in considering Crowe was also a main character and had to be added to the poster of the film. Like The Departed Warner Bros. did not submit Di Caprio or Damon’s names to the academy for Best Actor and supporting actor because they did not want to say one actor was supporting another which is the same thing Universal will say here. Just my opinion.

As with everything, I’d like to know where you got your facts from. Not because I’m contesting them, but because I want to learn more about the truth, as well. Like, for example, I think anything that Nicky would say about Frank is probably biased… REAL TALK… They were RIVALS. Of course he would say what he “said”. As for Tru Blue, I believe that, lol, if you’re FROM Harlem, like you say.

Even Nas said on Get Down that Nicky Barnes WAS the 70s (but there’s a long list of high profile celebrities), but I heard that there was a 3rd dude who also had Harlem on lock in the 70s too… Anyone?

Armageddon 619 u must be crazy. Harlem in the 20’s to the 50’s was a war zone. Black, Italians and Puerto Ricans had to be separated and could not pass a certain point. Harlem has always been a ghetto and was never a place where people would come to have a good time. Since the 1900’s Harlem has been a place where the poor have been tossed and had taught how to survive. Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Joe Gallo, Bugsy Siegeal, Frank Costello all came up from HARLEM and who are they well Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky were the first to ORGANIZE crime. Using the teachings of the Italian mob with the help from jewish Lansky made the “Mafia” organized crime syndicate. Like a corporation with share holders. Joe Gallo is the man that taught Nicky Barnes all this. Nicky Barnes all though he was a ratt and a coke head was the true American Gangster. A black man coming from nothing, starting a Black Council (Organization like the Mafia) and coming up. If Nicky had an overseas connect his story would be much more worth telling. This movie was great for what its worth but if u ever research the mafia or go to Barnes and Noble and look for the Mafia Encyclopedia u’ll find under B, Leroy “nicky” Barnes. The Council was considered a Black Mafia.

It was “Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown. Baddest Damn Cat In The Whole Damn Town.” i dunno if u look it up if u’ll find it but it’s true. Leatherface is right but with the way our government is today College wont even really help niggas make the income to get into middle class. Statics a few years ago showed that America no longer has a middle class its rich or poor. Kids coming out of college from the United States often can’t succeed as much as they should. Only because if a kid from the hood gets a scholarship and goes to college by the time they graduate and get a job they will have to pay off all their debts. Plus most of the kids that get scholarships from the ghetto are not getting much assistance from their parents (SOME not all) so they have to survive on what they make at a job. With that money they can live day to day. Paying bills, eating, paying for books and by the time they get out and get a high paying job they are paying back all the debts they owe the school or loans they had to take out. Right now America’s Real Estate Market has been down for 4 years. A good example would be how in ‘03 the property value in Florida was going up up up and investors would by land for cheap because people had money and were moving down south then it declined. People are no longer moving cause they can’t afford it. So investors that bought property for lets say 40,000 in florida can’t sell because they will not make a profit or not even make their money back as property value has sank. I bought property in Florida for 35,000 and now can’t sell because its worth 25,000 and I still have to pay to maintain the property has Florida has a lawn that any vacant land must be maintained (mowed and well kept). Also if god forbid there was a terrorist attack or something and American’s had to leave the country statics show that 8 out of 10 Americans could not leave because they have no money in the bank. People are living off credit and loans because economically America is fucked.

The movie definitely showed us three sides of addiction and the results of that addiction. One and the most obvious is the heroin addicts which will result in death. Two the dealers addiction to money and power. The chase for that dollar ultimately will kill you or land that ass in prison or both. Third was the cops addiction of wanting to bring down a big fish. This motherfucka lost his family because of it.

exactly i knew that when i read it…the government is the most corrupt of them all…if u ask me they are worst then the drug dealers they try sooo hard to prosecute and all the people that they try to degrade…they are the ones who introduced us americans to drugs..they brought it here…it was meant to kill off the black people and once they started seeing all their innocent rich private schooled white kids getting hooked on it they got nervous and decided that drugs was a major problem…all the security that we have…especially after the terrorist attacks and somehow like clock work drugs poor into our cities…allowing young dumb niggas to make a name for themselves and hopefully a couple million…if their lucky…and forcing alot of young children to grow up without parents…its a never ending cycle….young black people destined to fail…what people fail to realize is that they are just throwing bricks at the penitentary…u can only get as big as the feds allow you to get…when they see that u have aquired a couple million enough worth seizing they come after you…where they give u two choices…to rott in jail for the rest of ur life or to give up some other niggas getting money…and most weak niggas choose the latter…so some of our smartest black men and women with great business savy and the funds to give back to the community that they destroyed are taken out of society and placed in a cage like animals…isnt life funny…

A movie or documentary I saw once e said it best. "A white man brings something illegal into the country and they call him an entrepreneur (Kennedy’s father for people who are not aware. [im just sayin some niggas might not know] JFK’s father made all his money buy bringing illegal alcohol into the country [prohibition]) but when a brown man does it they call him a criminal.

Dyoungin that ain’t true. Most of the shit about this film is true. Frank Lucas did use the dead vets to import the narcotics into the country. That ain’t a lie. What lies are in the film are the facts of Frank being the ultimate gangster in Harlem at the time and his appearance to the community coming from the neighborhood and listening to people who knew Frank and Nicky, Frank was the flashy nigga, the clown. But he was making money. Nicky was the ultimate gangster but he was addicted to Coke, Angel Dust and a much more wide variety of drugs. Frank was not the smartest one and that is obviously true as of in the course of the film he gets caught because of his greed. None of them are really smart in the long run. They all get fucked in the end. It’s a dirty business and like RADMEZ said the movie shows it as all movies try to. The Godfather showed how much the Don lost and Michael at the end..the one thing they valued most…family. Blow showed that George Jung lost the one thing he loved the most…his daughter. Scarface showed us that Tony lost it all; once he achieved everything he ever wanted (the world). The point is yes these films are not totally based on the truth of someone’s life. They try to make it better then it is. For what its worth this film was very good not great but pretty fucking good and does teach niggas a lesson at the end as all these films try to do.

The film came out in Eurpoe two weeks before it came out in America. Jay-Z even got to see the film before it was released (hence why his fucking lame ass album is titled American Gangster and song is titled Blue Magic) which sucks balls. Jaffee u said the cops said in his biography that the film depicted him accurate well I’m from 106th in Harlem and everyone here says Frank was a flashy loud mouth nigga. So i listen to the streets. (also many officers and police men say he was no fucking family man hence ratting out his brothers.) but everyone has their own story and people will say whatever they want to hate on u. Like a former officer who is friends with my pops said that he was watchin a documentary on Marc Anthony and he said if it wasn’t for a police officer [he names the cop] that he wouldn’t be where he was because he was involved in gang activites and the cop took him off the streets. The cop told my father that the officer he mentions was his partner and would try and help him not get beat up by the gang in his block. He said Marc Anthony was never in a gang and they laughed about it. But other people from my neighborhood say he was so there is always two sides to the coin. Maybe he was depicted the right way and everyone on 106th to 117th street are lying. Either way he and Nicky Barnes ratted out their peeps and are still making money on their story today (smart fucks). I read the original script and Nicky Barnes was named Jackie they got his approval to use his real name during filming. Frank can return to Harlem cause he only ratted out dirty cops and his blood as where Nicky ratted out everyone in his organization (the council) and he will be shot dead if he ever came back.

very very good flick……I think you all make very interesting points. im from boston so i cant really tell if what was depicted was true or not. but i do know that the same arguement goes on around here about the legendary “GOD”(from the movie In Too Deep)……That movie depicted God as a big time family man , when in reality he was the absolute opposite (I know cuz i grew up in same projects he ran and most of my older family memebers knew him since he first began makin trips out here……my point is that i knew some of these things in the movie were going to be speculated and debated. it happens people……it aint right but hey, its hollywood. and thats what they do. So everyone should stop acting so suprised. But Dj Dr.Z seems like he provided the most insight on this topic and i COMPLETELY agree with him about how and why Americas economy is so fucked and how kids who go to school are still at a disadvantage when they get out…….and before i go…..American Gangster (the Album) is VERY VERY underrated……and the movies bootleg is by far the best in the history of bootlegs….

I do wish that they touched on Nickey Barnes a little more. I mean shit, he did get the cover of Life Magazine. That’s HUGE! And Frank Lucas is still hustling? I guess you can’t stop a gangster…

Search for Bumpy Johnson’s wife’s response to the movie. Frank Lucas wasn’t as close to Bumpy as the movie depicts. He wasn’t his mentor. She calls Lucas out. It’s raw. I can’t wait to see Mr. Untouchable. It’s about Nicky Barnes, who was more powerful than Lucas. It’s a documentary too, unlike American Gangster…where Hollywood skullfucks the truth. Lucas and Barnes are both snitches though. Don’t know why Hova wanted to be Lucas. The difference between Barnes and Lucas was that Barnes only fucked over the ones that turned him in. I was disappointed in this movie. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either, and way too long. Kinda like my comment.

It says in the movie that he gets released in 1991. It says nothing about him getting released in (i think 1988) and gets sent back to jail for violating parole (drug possession). I don’t remember where I saw it, but the sicilian and guido bosses were talking shit on him saying he could have bought land in Puerto Rico and grew the poppies himself (eliminating another type of middleman) and shipped them into the States with virtually no chance of being caught but he was a “dumb nigger” from the streets that wanted to be hands on.

The movie was way too drawn out! I fell asleep during parts of it. I thought it was going to be more gritty than it was. They should have showed the early relationship between Bumpy Johnson & Frank Lucas, and also showed more of Nicky Barnes.

So does anyone think they’re going to start stamping to dope bags with “BLUE MAGiC” again?!

With any bio-pic there will be a few falsehoods to help the story. If you read the biography of Malcom X and then saw his movie you would see a BIG difference.
