[Album Review] 50 Cent - "Before I Self Destruct"
by on November 19th, 2009
Some people say it's better to have something late; then never getting it at all. The older I get I find myself agreeing with that statement more and more. Any fan of 50 should know that this album should have been out a long time ago, but because of constant pushbacks and other issues we may not have known about. We had to wait, so on November 16th of this year, fans were finally given the exact thing they have been waiting for, Before I Self Destruct.
50 Cent's "Before I Self Destruct" will offer what many fans of 50 will call a return to the gritty style that he started with. For others it will bring the same old concept he's had his entire career; and for the rest of us it will either be a hit or miss. If fans take out the time to listen to the music, and really give an unbiased opinion, this just may be the project that makes them a fan of 50 all over again.
Lyrics-8.0
The same description of 50's lyrical skills can be used for every album that has come out for him. For this review; The statement remains the same. 50 has mastered the art of painting the perfect picture. He brings those street tales to life; and his aggressive voice and pace bring the lyrics alive for the listener. And in the rap features that are on the album, he easily holds his own. His album is a bit of an adjustment because his rhymes wont have your head spinning with any crazy rhymes in particular, but the finished product of a track is definitely almost always a satisfying experience.
Production-8.0
Besides three songs that were produced by Dr. Dre, Before I self Destruct has very diverse production list. Everyone from Rick Rock, to Havoc have some sort of production work on here. The tone that the production offers is bit darker then some of his most recent works. Despite what many categorized as heavily commercial singles. This album gives you heavy guitar chords with deep soul shaking bass filled drum beats. The kind of beats that influence the notorious head nod. The production breeds aggression, and 50 offers aggression and tough talk. The mood of the production is so dark that even the songs notoriously meant for the female fan base has a dark edgy feel to it.
Songs-8.0
50 Cent has suffered since the release of "Get Rich Or Die Trying". Fans and haters alike keep looking for him to put out the same kind of album that the previous was. Unfortunantly its almost impossible for 50 to do so. He's not in the same space, not in the same mindset. Everything is completely different, he's a different man, a different artist. So album after album fans say that he's gotten soft, or he's not as gritty as he used to be. If after listening to this album you can say that 50 is soft or isnt gritty anymore, you are truely biased or just plain deaf. The songs on this album were not formated for the weak, women or children. This is a straight gutter, smoke a blunt go smack up a couple of punks music. This is the type of music you listen to when posted up on the corner. 50's song making abilities stand out the most on Crimewave, Death To My Enemies, and of course my personal favorite's So Disrespectful, and Psycho. You listen to some of the songs on this album, like "I Got Swag" shows that although 50 has become very rich and even cockier then before. He still has some of the same disrespectful and gangsta mentalities that he came into the game in.
Conclusion-8.0
Everytime a new 50 album comes out; fans are always so fast to either say that they are happy because he's going back to his gritty style, or they cry foul because they think he's gotten soft and dosent care about his humble beginings. But in all honesty 50 has never gotten soft, at least not on his albums. He's been rapping about the same things since he came into the game. The only difference is that now when he makes an album, you can tell he's trying to make a club friendly hit so that he can help improve his sales. Before I self Destruct is definitely grittier then his previous two albums, but if you really listen to those last two albums they were both decent albums. You as a fan, probably wasn't feeling it at the moment. 50 really impressed on this album. He definitely kept it to his usual gangsta talk, but he also broadened the topics at time. You can hear his thoughts on his baby mother and son, something that is a bit closer to home then shooting a block up. That shows major maturity and growth. If this is his last album as an artist under Interscope, this is definitely not a bad way to go. Over the years 50 has done a lot for the game. He's changed it, helped it and hurt it in his own way's and as one chapter is about to close in his career, everyone should be very excited to see what the next one will bring. Its no Power of the Dollar, or GRODT, but its definitely not a Curtis either.

i did a review on it like a moth ago, he got a ten, yall niggas cant review shit.
Other than that, it’s a good review..
I was a bit confused when I read “Rick Ross” instead of “Rick Rock”..like wtf? But then I realized my mis-reading error..
Oh and, “So Disrespectful” and “Psycho” are my favorite’s too..
I guess we should just wait for the real reviews from rollingstone, allmusic, etc. because they only people who think this album is an 8 are 50’s gay ass fans.
this the same dude who said be easy on young mayo he is the funniest on the sit e mmmmmmmmmmmm
fire this cunt !!!
sad.
^^and who cares about his sales..he got bread, he not worrying about sales..shit i might buy it for the movie though

i’m a 50 fan and i love the album.. i’d say a 8.0 is about right, lyricalthought fuck these people commenting you’re on point
real talk: “If after listening to this album you can say that 50 is soft or isnt gritty anymore, you are truely biased or just plain deaf” …. “Before I self Destruct is definitely grittier then his previous two albums, but if you really listen to those last two albums they were both decent albums.”
50 keeping his fans happy and that’s all good.. if you hate it then fuck it, not like 50 need your money anyway, the album’s dope
personal favourites – Gangsta’s Delight, Crimewave, Psycho, So Disrespectful
(am i the only one who thinks 50’s most slept on skill is his ability to make dope hooks?)
i think lyricalthought can trash a comment as much as he wants to…
khuz the albums goes hard. i’d say 8 outta 10
you niggaz reaally think only lil wayne can sell 1 million albums, lmaooooo
before i self destruct is goibg to outsell blueprint three for a fact, didnt jay z get soo shook that he cancelled his whole tour, like wtf!

“Lyrics – 8.0”
Change your name please.
THis shit sucks beyond superheads skill. This should not even be considered a album. Its trash. 50 has lost it and only keep his name relavent because he talking about all bout other people. He a LAME!
The lyrics you mentioned are nice but nothing i havent heard before, Rakims lyric make you think, 50s dont thats why an 8 is a biased rating for lyrics on BISD
Lyrics: 3 (pathetic when Weezy can freestyle better than 50 can write)
Content: 1 (Before I self destruct!?!?! DUDE, are you fucking kidding me?)
Production: 10 (beats are the only thing this guy has left)
Overall: 4.
But look on the bright side… you’ve been needing something to stick under the broken leg of your nightstand and this CD will work perfectly!
50 Cent, Lloyd Bank$, Tony Yayo, Beanie Sigel
aka rappers
Roc
british bands, rhianna, gayfish, and the “NEW” jay z
I’m gonna rate this album
Production-8.5-beats were filthy
Lyrics-7.0-lmited by 50s vocab but for 50 best thing since massacre
Songs-7.5-Album fell off towards end..for a 50 fan 8.5 for songs and overall
7.5 overall, for a 50 fan this is a 9 since its better than alot of his shit and its ballin
2- compare jay z with 50 cent and stop making them illusional comparison of g unit and roc nation
3- jigga shits on 50 cent ( lyrics – flow – sales – credibility – respect – … – … – … )
Not even a contest son. Except for 50 & Banks man, them niggaz suck.
Add the rest of Aftermath and you got yourself an argument.
The fact that 50 cent is reaching out to Beanie Sigel should tell you that 50 himself is on Roc-A-Fella sack.
50 had WAY better lyrics when he was still trying to elbow his way into the game. No doubt about that. But he fell off hard in that department.
I remember when he said on a mixtape that Banks and Yayo were so good that he didnt even have to “Work hard” anymore. And thats the type of work ethic that made people ignore him.
the album sucks dick
i ve just checked Rapbasement.com .. these niggaz are crazy in another level .. look at what they said about 50 cent expected numberz :
" With all the beef between 50 Cent and Rick Ross, keep in mind that >>>>>>>officer Ricky<<<<<<<<< had his “Deeper Than Rap” album debut number 1 selling 158,000 copies "
this website is a fucking joke
great review. i give it an 8 as well. maybe 8.5.
An 8.5 bawahahahahahahahahahaha really would suck 50’s cock… wouldn’t you, Aladin?
so disrespectful
psycho
stretch
death to my enemies
the invitation
crime wave
and the songs for the ladies aren’t bad either. much better than god gave me style, s amazing, baltimore love thing, build you up, candy shop, amusement park..
i just don’t understand how can you say this album is garbage.. please stop being so biased and just listen to the original versions off the album (not the shitty quality they have on youtube) and give it a change to sink in.
50 definately didnt dissapoint.
P.S your favorite rapper album is not hotter than BISD
I’d give it a 6 or 7
an u niggas is sayin he cuk an blah blah blah when if he really sucked he wldnt b this famous or have this much money or this amount of total records sold.
Overall- 4
I havnt really heard it yet.
But do to the fact that his prior albums went in the following order…
GRODT- 10
Massacre- 8
Curtis- 6
Im just making an educated guess.
C’mon man… we both know that’s not true.
It says hes mastered the art of painting a picture, it doesnt mean he got sick lyrics.
It means u get pictures of what the fuck it is hes rapping, that doesnt equal good lyrics, no, but it aint bad either.
Shit u could make a song about a persons parts falling out of the body in a crazy sick way with the lyrics, but most of yall would disagree cuz that would be gross – but it could still mean the lyrics are on point.
Read and understand.
yu can tell 50 was trying to prove he hasnt gone soft like everyone says he is
he semi succeeded cuz he was rappin pretty hard on this shit.
if it was mee having to rate this.. i’d give him a 7
its kindaa disappointing that he only sold like 160,000 copies compared to the 1 million he was supposely going to sale according to him..
in the top ten albums of all time tho id have to open a spot for either “Get Rich Or Die Tryin”
or “The Massacre”
did you even listen to it? it’s a real piece of crap
and how retarded is dividing songs and lyrics into different categories, maybe you should have different categories for “production” and “beats” and “catchiness” as well?
